EMMANUEL IDOWU

Idowu Emmanuel was born in Osun State, Nigeria. His passion for art became evident during his

secondary school days in Ondo State, and he experienced a breakthrough in his artistic journey

during his university studies at OAU Ile-Ife, where he specialized in painting. It was during this time

that he was influenced by books on "pointillism" as well as color separation and harmony in

painting. This exposure allowed him to experiment with a stylistic approach that involved blending

small strokes of color, ultimately leading him to master the art of visually blending colors together.

Emmanuel's artistic style draws inspiration from African folkloric tradition, ageless wisdom, Yoruba

history, spirituality, and cultural heritage. His works reflect a deep appreciation for the rich artistic

traditions and storytelling techniques found within African culture. Through his art, he strives to

capture the essence of his subjects and convey their significance within the broader context of

African heritage. His dedication to exploring and incorporating these influences has resulted in a

unique and captivating artistic style. He has actively participated in numerous art exhibitions and

competitions throughout Nigeria. Notable exhibitions include the Life in My City Art Festival, where

he won the Dr. Pius Okigbo Prize for Technical Proficiency during LIMCAF 2019. He was also selected

as one of the top six artists sponsored to Dakar, Senegal, by Emeritus Prof. El Anatsui for the 14th

edition of the Biennale of Contemporary African Art in 2022. Additionally, he participated in the

Next of Kin exhibition at the Thought Pyramid Arts Center in Lagos, where he won the NOK Series 5

overall winner award in 2023. Idowu's artworks have found homes in public and private collections

in Turkey, the United Kingdom, and various locations throughout Nigeria

ANDREW ONONO

Onono hails from a community where paper bead craftsmanship was the lifeline of many Acholi

households, a business that many families in the quarters thrived from the time. His early years

were shaped by this tradition, as he watched his family transform vibrant strips of paper into

intricate, colorful beads. The process of turning paper into art became etched in his memory,

fueling a passion for creative expression. Growing up, he discovered his artistic talent while

effortlessly sketching pencil drawings throughout his primary and secondary school years. The

ability to translate the world around him onto paper was a gift, and it laid the foundation for what

would become his life's work. This innate talent led him to Kyambogo University in Uganda,

where he pursued a bachelor's degree in Art and Industrial Design, a journey that would refine

his artistic vision. It was at Kyambogo University that Onono’s art practice truly came alive, as

he delved deeper into his craft. His workspace, a dedicated room with his modest rental home,

became a sanctuary where colors, emotions, and stories converged on canvas. It is here that

his vision for art began to take shape, a vision that would defy convention and explore the

uncharted realms of human emotions. Andrew's art is not just about aesthetics; it is a medium

for change, a powerful voice that breaks the silence surrounding unspoken battles. His

inspiration comes from the heavy burden of stigma that shrouds mental health in African

communities, a topic often left untouched. With unwavering determination, he seeks to change

this narrative through his art, emphasizing the importance of mental health, not just inAfrica but

across the globe. In a world where vulnerability is often seen as weakness, he celebrates it as

strength in his paintings as he encourages conversations that are long overdue, inviting viewers

to reflect on their own mental well-being and that of those around them. Onono believes that art

has the power to transcend borders and language, to bridge the gaps that divide us. His artistic

journey is a quest to create a movement that embodies unity, solidarity, and collective

empowerment of the diverse African people. Through a harmonious fusion of cultures,

traditions, and histories, the artist paints a complexion of beauty and resilience on the faces of

youth, children, and elders. His works resonate with a call for a brighter, more inclusive future

for Africa.

Lagos based studio, Isinka, established in the early 2000s. In keeping a visceral fascination with

investigates the boundaries of what is possible in materialism as well as the potential of dynamic

materials. He draws on themes of nostalgia, identity, fantasy, and stereotypes to produce works

that are as visually captivating as they are reflective. Joseph has been involved in several solo

and group exhibitions, projects, and art fairs, including an extensive exhibition, textures, at

the Kent State University Museum in Ohio, USA. His works enjoy wide patronage and

Gathoni is a fluid artist based in Nairobi. She started fluid painting three months ago and has enjoyed every minute of it. Gathoni uses acrylics and mixed media to create her paintings. For Gathoni, art is not just a passion; it is therapy and a great excuse to avoid going bowling with her friends. to now, oil/acrylic painting totem animals and capturing deja vu emotions in African children's compositions My style is more abstract-realism, with loose brushstroke paintings. ANDREW WABACHA

Andrew Mbaria (born in Nairobi in April 1997) holds a bachelor’s degree in Real Estate from the Technical University of Kenya and is currently signed at the Uweza Art Gallery situated in

Kibera as an artist. Andrew’s work is hugely inspired by the universe beyond, with a huge influence on what he has gone through and grown through over the years. He has a never- ending interest in outer space. Because mostly whatever exists out there is factually unknown and unexplored. But to him, it is just an opportunity to create and present stories that, to some extent, evoke sensations of warmth and mystery in an unrestricted world of make-belief, with

the intention of building up narratives based on the person in space and not entirely on the space itself. Most of his works capture the unlived moments with the use of color, bearing

cosmic elements, creating a luring invite into his inner fantasy world whilst capturing intimate moments on a personal level. Aside from that, he presents portrait abstracts through the use of contrasts between different color values by incorporating pop art and expressionism art styles to present human emotions and qualities. Andrew works mainly with acrylic paint, oil pastels, collage, and phosphorescent ink. He has participated in local art events and exhibitions organized by Uweza. He has also exhibited his artwork in the US with ROAM Gallery, MA. His works have been extensively collected in private and public collections, including Kofisi Africa.

SHILPI DEB

Shilpi (born in 1995) is a Kenyan- Indian artist who lives and works between Nairobi and

exhibited in Kenya at the National Museum, Circle Art Gallery, Gravit Art Gallery, Alliance

and has worked in art direction for film, creating sets and props, her works have also been

central to community project campaigns in Kenya like “Lesso Lessons” that went on to win

awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival for Creativity (Gold Lion), D&AD (Yellow

Pencil), the London International Awards, London WARC, Loeries, One Show and Clips . Her

Practice stems from the need to untangle. She is interested in the continuous and fragile idea of

the self. How identity is collected and accumulated, what is innate, what is consciously added or

unconsciously added by way of conditioning and how this affects her responses, understanding,

contradictions and confusions. Her process is repetitive light layering, slowly making parts

heavy or blurry, having the background eat into the figures and vice versa, adding and

subtracting, porous stippling, leaking grids, having each layer subtly affect the look of the

following one. Where it is almost impossible to isolate any single layer, they all fuse into one

fuzzy form. Leaving us with pieces that have almost gone through the same processes of

collection as she has.

MICHAEL DUNGU

Michael Dungu is an Ugandan self taught multidisciplinary artist. He works majorly with mixed media i.e acrylic markers on canvas with a touch of color , ballpoint pen , graphite and digital art all uniquely representing a cross hatching style developed overtime that gives an outlook of incompleteness of his subjects. He draws because of the sense of fulfillment that comes with harnessing a God given gift….. an earthly purpose of sorts and hopes to impact and inspire the communities he dwells in using his craft. African human subjects and life forms are a maior inspiration as they speak to his patience and detail that they portray both expression-ally and physically.

OYEKALE OLUWASEGUN

In the depths of the ocean, a mysterious realm unfolds, bustling with a rich tapestry of creatures displaying beauty, grandeur, peril, and sensitivity to the rhythmic dance of water. As I dive into life's journey, I perceive it echoing the profound depths of the ocean, where each plunge brings forth new revelations. Life manifests in diverse phases, intricately woven with different

moments and seasons. Within my artwork, I utilize a palette of oceanic hues and depict its organisms to vividly illustrate the spectrum of human emotions and experiences: joy, pain, ailment, delight, progress, setbacks, sorrow, defeat, and more. Each stroke on the canvas echoes the many shades that life embodies. Our distinct identities and beliefs, instilled in us from birth, mold our responses to life's intricate design. In my creations, I explore these influences by utilizing an array of colors, symbolizing the rich diversity of human encounters. Amidst the ever- shifting currents of time, where sorrow and joy entwine, resilience becomes vital. It is within this pursuit that we seek hope and solace, finding peace amidst the undulating waves. My art delves into the very essence of existence, aiming to fathom its significance and reflect on the unfolding events that grace our journey through this cosmic expanse. I ponder over the reasons behind life's occurrences and how they vary from one being to another. The underwater backdrop in my creations stands as a profound metaphor for life itself. Just as the ocean's depths conceal secrets and enigmas, life too enfolds a similar mystery. Through this metaphor, I invite viewers To contemplate the vastness and intricacies that define our human voyage.
